Chandeliers
PRO TIP: Here’s a simple formula for determining chandelier size for dining rooms, foyers, great rooms and staircases.
Dining Room Measurement Formula
- Width of the Chandelier:
Measure the width or diameter of your dining table, then subtract 12 inches. The chandelier should be about 6-12 inches smaller in diameter than the table’s width. For example, if your table is 42 inches wide, the chandelier should be about 30-36 inches wide. - Height of the Chandelier:
For every foot of ceiling height, plan for 2.5-3 inches of chandelier height.- For example, with an 8-foot ceiling, aim for a chandelier that’s 20-24 inches tall.
- Hanging Height:
- The bottom of the chandelier should hang about 30-36 inches above the table for an 8-foot ceiling. For ceilings higher than 8 feet, add 3 inches of clearance for each additional foot.

Visual Comfort Antiqua XL Drum Chandelier
Foyer/Staircase/Great Room Measurement Formula
1. Diameter/Width of the Chandelier:
Add together the length and width of the room in feet. The total gives you the approximate diameter of the chandelier in inches.
- For example, if your room is 12 feet by 10 feet, the chandelier should be about 22 inches in diameter (12 + 10 = 22).
2. Height of the Chandelier:
For every foot of ceiling height, plan for 2.5-3 inches of chandelier height.
- For example:
- A 10-foot ceiling = 25-30 inches tall
- A 12-foot ceiling = 30-36 inches tall
3. Hanging Height:
- If there’s a window above the door, center the chandelier so it’s visible from outside.
- For ceilings lower than 10 feet, leave at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the chandelier.
- For ceilings higher than 10 feet, hang the chandelier so the bottom is about 8-10 feet off the floor.
